This program meets or exceeds the guidelines originally set down by the Ministry of Health, Emergency Health Services Branch in Ontario, Canada. This course provides participants with the knowledge; skills and techniques required to manage medical & trauma emergencies prior arrival of paramedics, and to assist EMS personnel once on scene.
Participants will gain knowledge in the following areas:
- Roles & Responsibilities
- Legal Considerations for the first responder
- Scene assessment
- Communicable disease
- Patient assessment
- ABC’s
- C-Spine control
- Identifying medical or trauma patients
- Respiratory emergencies
- Cardiac emergencies
- Clearing the airway with a suction unit
- Emergency oxygen use
- Ventilatory support via BVM
- Adjunct airway use – Oral & Nasal
- SAM program – Self Administered Medications
- Nitro Spray, Ventolin (Salbutimol), Epi Pen
- Vital signs
- Hemorrhage control via pressure dressings and pressure points
- Internal bleeding
- Secondary assessment
- Use of mnemonics – SAMPLE, PQRST in assessing a patient
- Emergency Child Birth (if requested)
